According to Zach Braff, an original star of the NBC-turned-ABC Sitcom Scrubs, the show was once banned from airing an episode related to medical marijuana.

At a reunion panel in Las Vegas, Braff told the crowd that the show’s creator Bill Lawrence once tried to write a plot-line with a cancer patient using medical marijuana to deal with her treatments, and ABC immediately pushed back.

“We only shot one thing ever that Bill had to throw out, ” Braff said. “That many years ago, they were like, ‘Medicinal marijuana? Get the hell out of here!’”

Lawrence then turned to the plot-line that the same cancer patient was virgin and requested a male prostitute, leading the show’s cast to set out to find her one. Given the alternative, ABC immediately green-lit the episode.
