Alberta is a massive demand for cannabis store license as hundreds try to get in on the soon-to-be legal market. The number currently sitting near 700, is the result of Alberta legislation to allow private retailers and place no cap on the number of stores licenses. 

The AGLC said that 684 requests have been made as of Tuesday morning, with many more expected to be coming. Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission spokeswoman Heather Holmen said that the numbers have been a challenge, but that it isn't considerably higher than anticipated. 

In comparison, the number of liquor stores in the province currently sits around 1,500. Although retail stores are private, the province will operate online cannabis sales.
