Canada’s move to lead the developed world in drug reform and spark the fire of an entirely new industry was voted the Canadian Press Business News Story of the Year for its wide-ranging implications for nearly every facet of society.

The title comes from an annual poll of the country’s newsroom conducted by the Canadian Press voted on by business editors and reporters.

Cannabis legalization won in a landslide, with 60 percent of the votes.

“It’s hard to think of an area in Canada that hasn’t been shaken up: not just commerce (from criminal act to booming startup to takeover target in the blink of an eye), but also policing, health care, justice, politics. Even culture (just ask Tommy Chong),” said deputy business editor of the Toronto Star, Andrew Meeson.

Canada’s legislation made headlines around the world and kept news editors busy with stories of massive product demand, huge company valuations, new technologies and innovations, and political battles around the industry. The New York Times even dubbed it Canada’s “national experiment.”

Cannabis legalization beat out the NAFTA trade negotiations with the United States and Mexico, and the country’s pipeline conundrum, which placed second and third respectively.
