A committee of state leaders and local regulators toured five medical cannabis dispensaries to learn about the cannabis industry and what recreational marijuana would look like in New Mexico.

"How they got started, what they would do differently with what they know now, and all of that is going to become our recommendations for a bill," said City Councilor Pat Davis, who is also the chairman of the governor's commission on cannabis legalization.

"We've never done creating a law like this where the public gets to weigh in online, and help us write the law alongside the policy makers," Davis said. "So, it's a big experiment and getting everybody engaged in this both proponents and opponents to get together and sort out some of their concerns."

Wednesday, August 14, is the first meeting for the governor's cannabis legalization work group at the University of New Mexico. The group also plans to travel to Roswell, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces.

Democrats had control of both houses of the state legislature last session, and tried to pass recreational marijuana. The House passed it, but the bill stalled in the Senate.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has said she supports signing a bill making cannabis legal for anyone over 21, but wants the rules to ensure safety.
