More than two years after Massachusetts voters chose to allow recreational cannabis sales, the state’s first two non-medical dispensaries are finally opening.

Cultivate, in Leicester, and New England Treatment Access (NETA) in Northampton will be the only two cannabis retailers open today, and are expected to bring in such large crowds that police details have been set up.

The process to develop the Massachusetts recreational cannabis market has been riddled with delays and setbacks over the past two years. Licenses were delayed, and laws changed, hampering many possible sites and forcing push-backs on opening dates.

To purchase recreational cannabis in the state, buyers must be at least 21 years old and show age verification.
