Canada’s recreational legalization this month has also stirred up some issues for those that rely on cannabis for medicinal purposes.

The rush of demand that came from the hundreds of thousands of Canadian consumers looking to get their hands on Canada’s first legal marijuana products has created a shortage of product for everyone.

Health Canada does not require licensed producers to keep a stock of product on hand for medical users, and the rush from the end of legalization led to product shortages or complete sellouts.

A Health Canada spokesperson responded “While there is no regulatory requirement for licensed producers to prioritize sales to individuals who require cannabis for medical purposes over non-medical sales, it is expected that they will do so.”

Many insiders believe that until the number of licensed producers increases to meet the demand of both the recreational and medical market in Canada, the shortages will likely not see an end any time soon.
