Licensed producer Tilray Inc. has received permission from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agency to export medical cannabis product to California.

Based in Nanaimo B.C., Tilray is the first company to export the U.S. Schedule 1 drug south of the border.

The company will be exporting capsules containing a cannabinoid formulation with THC and CBD. The University of California San Diego’s Medical school will receive the shipment to examine cannabis as a potential treatment for adults with essential tremor.

According to Dr. Fatta Nahab, a neurologist and associate professor at UC San Diego’s medical school, getting approval took months and required an OK from the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. DEA.
