Despite a relatively positive reception from users across the country on October 17th, purchasers of legal cannabis were confused about the amount of packaging used in their orders.

According to one user, Greg MacLean, who purchased from the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation last week, just two grams of marijuana came with two plastic containers, two cardboard boxes and clear plastic casing, all enclosed in a brown paper bag.

Producers say the packaging waste stems from strict Health Canada regulations aimed at protecting youth. Allan Rewak, executive director of the Cannabis Council of Canada, said the industry has been concerned about the issue for quite some time, but understands Health Canada’s caution.

Rewak pointed out that all product packaging and warning signs have to be childproof and of certain dimensions.
