Despite incidents of accidental cannabis consumption by pets rising according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), animal companions are getting an intentional cannabis dosage with increasing frequency.

Numerous products for a variety of animals are showing up on store shelves and some pet lovers are turning to cannabis to assist with pet ailments.

Many companies are manufacturing products for pets containing cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid found in both hemp and cannabis plants that can have an effect on mood, anxiety and other functions. Some company products claim they can reduce seizures in pets with epilepsy, relieve pain and mitigate anxiety, and there are early studies that seem to confirm that potential.

With chews, treats, oils, topicals and more, pet owners have numerous options for treating their furry friends with cannabis. Experts warn it’s important to be skeptical of pet-focused cannabis products, but that hasn’t stopped many from seeking such treatment options.

While hemp-derived CBD products for pets are legal in the United States, Canadian veterinarians are not permitted to prescribe or distribute cannabis products to pets. As CBD is a cannabinoid, it is regulated by Health Canada regardless of whether it is derived from hemp or cannabis; products for pets are completely untested and unregulated by any authorizing agency.

Pet owners considering any cannabis product should discuss options with their veterinarian before making any decisions about cannabis for animals.
