In a new profile released by the Globe and Mail, retired NHL enforcer Riley Cote sets to explain how and why he became one of the biggest advocates for medical marijuana in the NHL’s ear.

“Most of these guys have been brainwashed into thinking cannabis is marijuana and marijuana is just smoking joints,” Riley said earlier this week when he was in Toronto to speak to a group of NHL alumni along with representatives of three cannabis companies. “I consume cannabis every day but in small amounts. I’m not smoking Cheech-and-Chong style all day.”

According to the profile, Cote, who is 36, says that cannabis tinctures and oils are a part of his daily routine to treat problems common to most NHL enforcers, such as anxiety, inflammation, and lack of sleep.

Cote helped form the group Athletes For Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of athletes through alternative medicine and better health care. He goes onto explain that education is still in its infantile stages when it comes to potential patients, and that it is paramount that people learn more about it.
