Glaucoma is a serious issue for patients around the world that is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Most often caused by elevated intraocular pressure, it damages the optic nerve and stops the brain and the eye from communicating the information vital to sight.

The relationship between medical marijuana and Glaucoma is a complex one. Scientists have found that THC, found in cannabis, can relieve eye pressure and thus prevent any damage from getting worse. However, because the effects are short-lived, a patient would have to smoke cannabis between six and eight times a day.

As a result, scientists have been working to develop THC alternatives to smoking, such as extract pills, but due to side effects, many have been ineffective. Eye drops and other compounds related to THC of the plant are being studied, however nothing has been set out yet.
