For the first time in over 70 years, Missouri farmers will be allowed to grow industrial hemp during the 2020 growing season. Applications to be submitted by the farmers to receive a permit are now online and will start to get processed as early as the second day of 2020.

Spokesperson from the The Missouri Department of Agriculture, Sami Jo Freeman, stated that "[p]roducers should know that they need to wait for that final approval before purchasing, receiving or planting industrial hemp seed. We really want them to have that registration in hand so that legally they are in a good spot".

The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill allowed for industrial hemp production nationwide. It is now up to the individual states to decide on regulation of said agriculture.

"Not only for the industry, but for government entities who are trying to provide opportunities for producer and industry feedback. But also strike that balance of doing our job as we see it in state government to provide the framework", said Freeman in a statement.
