On Monday, newly-sworn in Governor J.B. Pritzker promised his constituents in Illinois that he plans to make good on his campaign promise of legalizing cannabis.

“In the interests of keeping the public safe from harm, expanding true justice in our criminal justice system, and advancing economic inclusion, I will work with the legislature to legalize, tax and regulate the sale of recreational cannabis in Illinois,” Pritzker said in remarks shortly after taking the oath of office.

Pritzker made legal adult-use cannabis a priority throughout his campaign going back to the Democratic primary, at one point even holding a press conference outside a medical marijuana office.

Pritzker replaces another cannabis-friendly governor, albeit for only medical reasons, in former Governor Bruce Rauner in a state  likely to become a major market for cannabis players when it is fully legalized.

Pritzker joins a number of recently-elected U.S. governors seeking expanded cannabis laws past their current medical programs, including re-elected New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.
