Shortly after being sworn in for his third term in office, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reiterated his support for legalized recreational marijuana in the state.

“New York led on legalizing recreational marijuana, bringing justice and new economic opportunity not for rich corporations, but for the poor communities that paid too high a price for too long,” he said.

Cuomo, who as recently as a year ago referred to marijuana as a “gateway drug”, has swiftly changed his stance on the plant. He formally endorsed marijuana legalization for the first time last month, and made it one of his priorities for New York’s 2019 legislative session.

The governor formed a working group to draft a legalization bill in August after a Department of Health report found that the benefits of cannabis legalization outweigh the potential consequences.

Legalization in New York is likely this year, as the Democrats took control of the state Senate in November midterm elections, and have shown support for the initiative.
