According to Statistics Canada Canadian cannabis spending was up 1.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2018, reaching $5.7 billion on an annualized basis.

The agency recorded that nearly 85 percent of the purchases were illegal, down from 98 percent in mid-2014. The remaining 15 percent is contributed to legal medical marijuana sales.
$784 million was spent on medical marijuana in the quarter, including $52 million of personal production.

In comparison during the same time period, Canadians spent $22.5 billion on alcohol, including $9.1 billion on beer and $7.2 billion on wine. Cannabis spending surpassed the $5.3 billion spent on spirits.
