Toronto based Cronos Group Inc. is partnering with Boston based Ginkgo Bioworks Inc. to genetically engineer the active compounds in marijuana. Gingko and its partners will work with Cronos to identify rare cannabinoids that are found in tiny quantities in the plant, extract its DNA, and produce them in a lab.

According to Jason Kelly, CEO of Ginkgo, the process produces a better product because it is “cheaper, its not subject to weather conditions, the price isn't all over the place, and its not different if you grow it in Morocco or somewhere else”.

The deal will see Cronos initially give Ginkgo about US$22 Million to fund research and development, and will also issue up to US$100 million worth of common shares in tranches as it achieves certain production milestones.
