Despite only having two stores open in the state for most of the first four weeks of recreational marijuana, Massachusetts generated an astounding $9.3 million in sales.

In total, by the end of the first month Massachusetts only had five dispensaries open, with one opening December 15, and two others getting approval for late December to begin selling.

The first two open, Cultivate in Leicester and New England Treatment Access (NETA) in Northampton, brought in a combined more than $440,000 in their first day of opening.

The state averaged $2.3 million sales per week, and according to the Marijuana Business Factbook 2018, the state has an estimated 900,000 to 1.1 million customers within its borders.

Compared to other states, Massachusetts had a relatively small opening month, mainly due to the lack of open retailers. Oregon opened its first month of sales with $14 million, but a total of 320 dispensaries, Colorado at $14.7 million and 59 dispensaries, and Nevada with $27.1 million between 53 dispensaries.
