In a move that will help the Canadian pharmacy giant to be allowed to dispense medical marijuana, Health Canada has approved Shoppers Drug Mart’s application for a medical marijuana production license.

“As trusted medication experts, we believe pharmacists have an important role to play in the safe and informed use of medical cannabis, and this is the first step in our journey to provide medical cannabis to our patients,” said Loblaw spokeswoman Catherine Thomas in an emailed statement. “We will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.”

The company has said that it has no interest in producing medical marijuana, but rather received the license so that it can receive its sales license in the future. Currently under Health Canada regulations the only legal means to receive medical marijuana is through mail-order delivery from Canadian licensed producers.

Shoppers Drug Mart, and its parent company Loblaw Companies Ltd., have been busy in the cannabis space since the industry took off with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement to recreationally legalize it. They have signed supply deals with many Licensed Producers including Aurora Cannabis, Aphria Inc., MedReleaf Corp, and Tilray Inc, all subject to Health Canada’s approval of their application.

It also announced in July that they were partnering with Manulife Financial Corp to offer medical marijuana insurance coverage.
Loblaw Companies Ltd. is also looking to sell recreational marijuana in its Newfoundland and Labrador stores once it is nationally legalized on October 17th.
