Depression is something that many people deal with and struggle to treat. But as mental health awareness becomes more and more prominent, people have begun to test and share different ways to cope with the illness that can be crippling at times.

Among the possible treatments people are using is medical cannabis. The research for connecting medical cannabis and depression is still in its infancy, but there are some that have begun to come out.

Scientists at the University of Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) studied chronic stress and depression with a focus on endocannabinoids. According to RIA senior research scientist Samir Haj-Dahmane, “In the animal models we studied, we saw that chronic stress reduced the production of endocannabinoids, leading to depression-like behavior.” Because of this, he is hopeful that cannabis cannabinoids can be used to help reverse the effect.

Many more studies, including human trials, will be needed in the future, but so far, it seems that cannabis may be able to be used to increase mood, and battle stress-induced depression.
