A new study from Statistics Canada analyzing wastewater to track cannabis usage suggests Halifax is consuming more marijuana than any other other major Canadian city.

Researchers looked at the level of metabolites processed during cannabis consumption and later eliminated from the body into wastewater across 15 treatment plants in  Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

The Halifax rate of consumption per capita was 1,310 micro-grams per person per week, with Montreal at 976, Toronto at 451, Edmonton at 416, and, surprisingly, Vancouver at 288.

The study results represented almost 8.4 million people between March and August of this year, but researchers noted there were often large disparities in the amount of cannabis detected month-to-month.

Statistics Canada said sampling will continue through to the spring of 2019.
