There has been many back and forth in the scientific community on if medical marijuana can help patients suffering with depression, or if it can actually make it worse or even cause it.

However, according to Dr. Daniel Hall-Falvin of the Mayo Clinic, “It does not appear that marijuana directly causes depression”.

According to Dr. Hall-Falvin, “it's likely that the genetic, environmental or other factors that trigger depression also lead to marijuana use. Some people with depression may use marijuana as a way to detach from their depressive symptoms. Heavy users may appear depressed as a result of the dulling effects of the drug on feelings and emotions.”

As more research comes out in the future years, the picture will become much more clearer, rather than relying on individual anecdotal evidence.
