27 year old free agent Mike James has filed a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for medical marijuana to the National Football League.

The application was denied in May however talks are still ongoing and can be changed.

James, who was drafted in 2013 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, suffered a broken ankle during his rookie season that required surgery. Throughout his career, he faced chronic pain and began using painkillers which he says he became addicted to.

James estimates more than half of the players in the NFL are using, or have used, cannabis.
