Ontario-based Tetra Bio-Pharma Inc., a Canadian licensed producer, and Panag Pharma Inc. have announced they are coming together to develop a drug to treat animals. The two companies recently announced they have submitted an application to the Veterinary Drugs Directorate at Health Canada for a study to examine the use of a cannabis-based drug to treat ocular pain and inflammation in canines.

“Several companies are marketing cannabis-based treatments for ailments in companion animals, but there is a major gap in understanding the safety and efficacy of these drugs,” said Dr. Guy Chamberland, chief executive officer and chief scientific officer of Tetra Bio-Pharma.

Tetra Bio-Pharma said that, if approved, it will also be launching trials into the companion animal market.

Cannabis and hemp producers have begun to show an interest in the animal health market, worth an estimated $32 billion globally, as the ability to study and distribute their products becomes more acceptable in many countries.
