The University of British Columbia is setting up Canada’s first professorship to research how cannabis can play a role in the opioid crisis that has gripped the country.

The two year position is being created in partnership with B.C.’s Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions which will donate $500,000, the B.C. Centre on Substance Use, and Canopy Growth Corp. who has committed $2.5 million.

The professorship will be called the Canopy Growth Professorship in Cannabis Science despite being an arms-length agreement, meaning Canopy will have no influence over the study and its results.

The program will also create the Canopy Growth Cannabis Science Endowment Fund to support ongoing cannabis research.
