Despite still being incredibly low compared to North American levels, Australia’s medical marijuana patient numbers are increasing rapidly.

A change in policy in New South Wales in March that made it easier for doctors to prescribe cannabis has resulted in an increase of 322 patients.

The total number of patients in the country of 24 million is now sitting at just over 1,000.

The incredibly low number of patients relative to the population is due to an immense amount of red tape instilled by the Australian federal government. The country does not have a single system, but instead is regulated state-by-state , and many say it is complex and confusing.
