Senator Rachel Siewert, a senator and member of the Australian Greens, has introduced the Australian Cannabis agency Bill 2018 in hopes of legalizing marijuana for recreational use across the country.

The memo states that cannabis would be regulated in the same way as tobacco. However, because of Constitutional requirements, the bill only applies to the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, so work would have to be done to bring the rest of the country into the program. The memo pledges to "ensure that we have a consistent national scheme, which will reduce confusion and ensure that people are not able to access regulated cannabis in one state, but only able to access it via the black market in another."

Australia currently has a medical marijuana program in effect, however due to major hurdles for patients to gain access, patient numbers are extremely low compared to its North American counterparts.
