Recreational cannabis will take a “plain Jane” look and feel when it hits shelves in Canada later this summer. All packaging will contain only a standardized cannabis symbol and one of 14 health warning messages. These recommended packaging rules are part of a Health Canada report summarizing feedback from 3,200 people on Canada’s regulatory approach to cannabis.

The regulatory approach will be enacted after the Cannabis Act wins final approval with no requirement to obtain Parliament approval. It has been said that Health Canada does not intend to propose a transition period for recreational cannabis products which in turn means licensed producers would be required to meet the new packaging and labeling requirements immediately.
