This week, the U.S. house panel that oversees federal drug enforcement is scheduled to vote on a bill that would increase research on medical marijuana.

The Medical Cannabis Research Act, if passed, would require that the federal government issues more licenses to allow for a greater amount of marijuana eligible for scientific studies. Currently in the United States, only the University of Mississippi is federally allowed to grow marijuana for scientific use, and many recipients often complain about delays and its low quality.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, and 40 bipartisan cosponsors.
