A health reform measure that could lead to legal cultivation, manufacturing, and prescribing of medical cannabis in Ecuador was unanimously approved by the National Assembly’s standing committee on health.

The bill, titled Libro II del Codigo de la Salud, would:
  • Require further discussion to determine the approved medical conditions and types of cannabis products allowed.
  • Prohibit advertising of any kind.
  • Establish distribution through pharmacies with a patient registry.
  • Cap THC content at 1%.
The bill will now move to the full assembly and will have to be approved by President Lenin Moreno if it passes there. If approved, the bill could be enacted into law in the next 6-8 months.
