Earlier this month the government of Greece licensed its first two legal marijuana producers in hopes of gaining market share in the world’s burgeoning market worth billions.

Greece legalized the use of medical cannabis last year and in March lifted a ban on growing and producing it. According to the Economy and Development Ministry, 12 more producers will be licensed by the end of 2018.

The country has said it is opening up to medical marijuana to spur economic investment, but that recreational marijuana is not up for consideration.

Under the Greek program, medicinal cannabis products would be available on prescription from chemists, but not covered through state health insurance.

The first products are expected to be available in 12-18 months.
