This past weekend, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill to legalize the growing of hemp from state farmers, effective immediately.

The Industrial Hemp Act (Senate Bill 2298) lifts restrictions on the production of industrial hemp, and removes hemp from the Illinois’ Noxious Weed Act and Cannabis Control Act.

Hemp products are currently legal to buy and sell in the state, but farmers were restricted from growing it because of its status under federal law. The change came under President Obama through the 2014 Farm Bill, that allowed states to legalize hemp growing.
