Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law yesterday a bill that will allow patients who have been prescribed opioid painkillers the option to use medical marijuana as an alternative.

Rauner has been reluctant on cannabis in the past and has hesitate to expand the state’s medical marijuana program, but he believes the law can help curb the opioid epidemic in the state.

While signing the bill, Rauner stated, “It’s clear that medical marijuana treats pain effectively, and is less addictive and disruptive than opioids”.

Opioid overdoses killed nearly 2,000 people in Illinois in 2016, and an estimated 72,000 people across the US in 2017.
