A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Robert Wilkie on Thursday asking him to initiate a “rigorous clinical trial” of medical marijuana. The focus, according to the group, would be on treating post traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain.

The move comes after years of increasing medical marijuana use from veterans seeking a potential alternative to addictive opioids.

The group also appealed to former VA Secretary David Shulkin, who cited bureaucratic red tape as the reason the agency could not follow through with the research.

Those involved in the letter were Tennessee Republican Rep. Phil Roe, Alaskan Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, Montana Democrat Senator Jon Tester, and Democrat Representative Tim Walz of Minnesota.
