Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX, has announced that it will permit travelers to carry up to the state legal limit of marijuana in their carry on while travelling.

As of January 1 2018, California has allowed adults to carry up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption, which the airport says it will honor.

The move is not likely to pose an issue with travelers flying within the state, however after cross state lines, which are technically federal jurisdiction, travellers could be at risk of prosecution. This is the case even if travelling from California to another recreationally legal state, however it is unlikely that an issue does arise in that situation.

This can also pose an issue for airlines as well, as the planes themselves are subject to federal law, and by knowingly carrying cannabis, they could be subject to punishment by law.

The move is the first in the United States, and showcases the attitude many states have developed around marijuana, even despite federal support.
