Lawmakers in Illinois have passed a plan that will give patients using opioids access to medical marijuana treatment instead.

Illinois currently only allows medical marijuana to be given to its 30,000 registered medical marijuana patients for a strict list of 40 eligible conditions. With the new law however, the number of patients with a medical marijuana prescription could double or even triple.

The plan still needs to be signed off on by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and if accepted, will be implemented next year.
