The state Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) announced, earlier this week, that residents of the state of Michigan will be able to purchase cannabis from retail establishments starting on December 1st of this year.

According to Marijuana Regulatory Agency spokesman David Harns, "[s]imilar to the medical market, we expect it to be a slow build-out as the production of plants and products increases. This will create an environment where businesses can supply the market as quickly as possible[.]”. Legalization for adult-use cannabis was approved by Michigan voters last November.

Originally, state officials had plans to legalize cannabis consumption in 2020. The initial plan sought to legalize cannabis in relation to the next cultivation cycle. However, due to consumer demands, officials allowed for inventory splitting to allow a run on the market. Harns stated, "[w]e continued to watch how the medical supply was looking and asked ourselves what the best way to allow access to the adult-use market was[.]” According to Harns, "[b]y only allowing a transfer of 50 percent [of medicinal cannabis to adult-use], it will keep production and sales on the medical side moving as well."

Michigan cannabis supplies will be on close watch as the adult-us cannabis rolls out state-wide starting this December.
