The city of Montreal has announced they will treat cannabis just as they do tobacco, however a new incoming provincial government may alter that.

Mayor Valerie Plante said about the regulations. “Our decision to apply the current provincial legal framework was based on considerations that are geared toward public safety, and that correspond to the reality and density of Montreal's population.”

The laws permit people to smoke:

  • Outdoors at most parks, but not at sports fields, splash pads, wading pools or skate parks;
  • More than nine metres away from the door to a public place where smoking is forbidden; and
  • At home, depending on whether landlords or condo associations have rules against smoking

Smoking will not be allowed:

  • On the patio of a bar, restaurant, or other place of business; or
  • Inside hospitals, schools, CEGEPS, universities, daycare centers, bars, restaurants, sports centers, concert halls, or on public transportation.
