Montreal’s new marijuana policy will allow its police officers to consume cannabis on their personal time, so long as they show up for work “fit for duty”.

The policy is among the most lenient in the country, in contrast to what the soon-to-be premier Francois Legault’s marijuana laws for the province will be, which are seen as among the most strict.
The restrictions for police officers, or lack thereof, are also in sharp contrast to police forces such as the RCMP and the Toronto Police Department who are reportedly planning on banning their members from smoking cannabis within 28 days of their shift.

According to police spokesman Andre Durocher, the policy is mirrored from its other influential substance policies. “It’s the same for anything else. It’s what we call the ‘fit for duty’ [principle],” Mr. Durocher told reporters at City Hall. “Whether it’s under the influence of cannabis, alcohol or medication.”
