Sources in the provincial government have told the Globe and Mail that government officials, specifically finance minister Vic Fedeli and Attorney General Caroline Mulroney, will announce  a plan to open up Ontario’s cannabis retail segment to private vendors.

The announcement could come as early as next week, and it is expected that the province will still control online sales, as well as distribution of product to the private retailers.

Previously, under the Liberal government of Kathleen Wynne, Ontario was planning to have cannabis retail owned and operated solely by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO).
