In an attempt to decrease the amount of marijuana entering the black market, Oregon has drastically dropped the amount of marijuana medical patients can purchase in a day to one ounce.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) announced the change last Thursday and the rules will come into effect August 24 for six months.

The move came because the OLCC is facing pressure to react to the state’s oversupply of cannabis, which is now being funnelled into the black market. The state says that the previous daily limit of 24 ounces was a factor, and according to a news release the action “action on OMMP purchase limits is designed to prevent potential diversion of usable marijuana into the secondary illegal market.”
