A bill to legalize cannabis-based medicines that was approved last month by the Portuguese Parliament officially went into law July 1.

Sales are expected to begin by the end of 2018, and any patient with a prescription will be able to get cannabis in any ingestible form from licensed pharmacies.

Under the law, medical cannabis can be used for PTSD, chronic pain, cancer therapy side effects, as well as for any condition whereby a doctor prescribes it due to other treatments being ineffective.

All cannabis products will require a government license.
