On Wednesday Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer filed his bill to take marijuana off of the federal controlled substances list.

The move would allow states to continue to decide on how to regulate cannabis without any possibility of federal intervention. This would give the legal US cannabis industry much more breathing room, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a known opponent of legalized marijuana, would not be able to intervene in industry affairs.

Among other stipulations, the bill would not change the federal government's authority to prosecute trafficking between marijuana-legal and illegal states.
