On Tuesday, South Africa’s top court unanimously legalized the private use of cannabis, a move that upheld a decision by a lower court stating it was “unconstitutional and therefore invalid” to criminalize the drug.

The ruling will allow adults to consume cannabis in private and grow marijuana for private consumption.

The court has given parliament 24 months to adopt the ruling and still makes using cannabis in public as well as selling and supply it illegal in the country. It is now up to the South African parliament to determine the legal limits of how much someone can grow or use.
