Valeria Dora, the President of the Pharmacy Association in Zurich, has come out in support of marijuana legalization, saying more and more people in Switzerland are consuming cannabis, and selling it legally would provide a safer market.

The statement comes after the group released a position paper stating its desire to decriminalize marijuana in the country.

The group argued that the necessary infrastructure required to regulate such a market is already in place, and unlike in many U.S. states, they would not advocate for an “unrestricted liberalisation” policy to sell the drug.

Roughly 200,000 people in Switzerland consume cannabis regularly and experts estimate the current illicit market in the country is worth 600 million francs each year.

The state cost to control cannabis use in the country is believed to be up to 1 billion Swiss francs annually.
