On Saturday the Texas Republican party voted to endorse marijuana decriminalization, medical marijuana, and industrial hemp, as well as calling on the federal government to lower marijuana’s classification from schedule 1.

The move is a major shift in stance as the Texas Republican Party is widely considered the most conservative in the country, and was applauded by marijuana legalization supporters across the country.

Heather Fazio, coalition coordinator for Texans for Responsible Marijuana Policy was happy with the move, pointing out “"Our state wastes valuable criminal justice resources arresting between 60,000-70,000 Texans annually. Delegates took a stand this week for a better approach."

Low-THC medical cannabis extracts are currently legal in Texas as of 2015.
