According to a Thai official, a draft bill now under consideration in Thailand proposes allowing marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The move would be a major shift in policy among any Asian nation, many of whom carry some of the stiffest drug policies in the world.

Jet Sirathraanon, the public health committee chair of Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly, emphasized that it would be legal “for medication only, not for recreation,” but signaled it could be a first step to full legalization by adding it could be “an (economic) opportunity for the Thai people.”

According to Bloomberg reports, Thailand was one of the world’s largest exporters of marijuana in the 1980’s, but has since enforced severe punishments for those convicted of trafficking.
