Interior Minister Sajid Javid announced on Thursday that the United Kingdom will reverse its position on medical cannabis and begin to allow cannabis-derived medicinal products.

The announcement comes after two notable cases of children from the UK being treated with cannabis oil to control epilepsy that gripped British, and International headlines. “Recent cases involving sick children made it clear to me that our position on cannabis-related medicinal products was not satisfactory,” Javid told reporters.

The move will change cannabis-derived products from schedule 2, meaning it can be studied, but has no therapeutic use, to a Schedule 2, meaning that it can be prescribed directly to patients by a specialist physician.

The process will be in place by the fall, as the government now has to determine what types of products will qualify under their definition of medicinal. In the meantime, clinicians may still apply for the Home Office Expert Panel to give patient access to medicinal marijuana products.
