Victoria city councillor Ben Isitt is introducing a motion regarding cannabis lounges that will be discussed by council at their August 9th meeting. Specifically, the motion requests the city to compare Victoria’s clean air regulations with Denver’s, a city that allowed cannabis lounges after Colorado legalization took effect.

Isitt is looking for a solution for those who wish to smoke but are unable to do so at home. Because of the Clean Air Bylaw, smokers cannot simply go outside, and so many will be unable to participate legally in the recreation market.

The Clean Air Bylaw pertains to any smokable substance, not just cannabis, and states that no one can smoke or vape within seven meters of a door, on a patio, or any public spaces.

If the motion passes, staff would report back to council in the fall and advise whether the city should move forward with the plan.
