It is known that the legal cannabis industry has had its issues with financial services in the US, but now it appears the banking system has gone one step further.

Nikki Fried, a democratic candidate running for agriculture commissioner in Florida has had her campaign bank account shut down by Wells Fargo because she received donations from lobbyists in the medical cannabis industry.

Nikki’s top campaign program is to expand Florida’s medical cannabis program, and as a result the bank began asking questions about her financial backers.

Banks have had trouble navigating the legal landscape of the marijuana industries over the last few years, but as they are federally regulated, they are officially prohibited from dealing with marijuana in any legal state, because it is still federally illegal.
